As in Canagarajah’s study of college freshmen in a predominantly African American writing course, students used this style in their work to reap the rewards—to make the grade. This is also an offshoot of acting White. I call this filling the “academic essay” with emptiness. This is a dangerous literacy practice. As Canagarajah demonstrated, some students’ work suffers because the writing comes off as flat, uncertain, and lacking confidence. Furthermore, this practice lends itself to permanent identity damage to the writer.

We learned from Freire that “A pedagogy will be that much more critical and radical, the more investigative and less certain of ‘certainties’ it is. The more ‘unquiet’ a pedagogy, the more critical it will become. A pedagogy preoccupied with the uncertainties rooted in the issues [of the politics of race, class, gender, culture, history] is by its nature, a pedagogy that requires investigation” (Freire, 1994: 102). ” Multicultural literacy education involves the integration of content from students’ cultures, perspectives, and ideas, including European American cultures, perspectives, and ideas, teacher facility with a wide array of culturally appropriate practices and attitudes, and the engagement of different ways of knowing and learning.

This approach is very valuable because it emphasizes the fact that all women and men are created equal. Nevertheless, cultural difference is not factored into the analysis of rhetorical approaches to problem solving. Students simply have not reached a sufficient level of cognitive development if they have not conceptualized or solved a problem in a conventional manner (Bizzell, 1982). Cognitive rhetoric simply does not focus on cultural difference. Epistemic and borderlands theories are part of the post-process approaches to writing and literacy education.
